This session of SYOS will be taught by Rachel Laverdiere.
Rachel Laverdiere is a writer, language instructor and potter from Saskatoon. She earned her B.A. in French Literature (1996) and B.Ed. from University of Saskatchewan (2000), and her Creative Writing Certificate from the University of Calgary (2016). Her essays grapple with childhood physical and sexual abuse, love-marriage-divorce, critical illness, single-parenting, burn out and the simple pleasures of surviving. In 2015, Rachel's flash fiction story, “Relationship Roulette” was shortlisted for the Geist Short Long-Distance Writing Contest. Her poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction has been widely published in print and online literary journals such as The New Quarterly, filling Station, Bending Genres, Atlas and Alice, and The Nasiona. Recently, Rachel completed her first full-length manuscript, a genre-bending essay collection entitled Scraps: A Life in Piecework. She is a regular contributor at Entropy and a contributing editor at Barren Magazine.
Rachel has taken Nicole's Outliers course twice, as well as her Spark Your *Visual* Story course. In her own words, "These 'outlier' forms have allowed me to delve into stories of pain/shame/grief of my past and excavate their kernels of joy and inspiration. Teaching this course combines two of the things I love most—teaching and writing—into one. I’m honoured and thrilled to be joining Nicole in mentoring writers as she has mentored me."
